Union Pleasant Elementary School
SOLE has had hands on lessons with classes over the past few years, bringing the students out and sharing experiences in many different subject areas. We have had over 500 students each year. We are working on having reference materials at the garden. The materials we would like to have out at the garden would be reference books for k-5th grades as well as storybooks for early grades. The following are subject areas we can work on in the garden;Plant life cycle, worms, insects, weeds, mushrooms, organic gardening, plant disease, herbs, cookbooks; raw recipes, composting, garden produce and nutrition. In addition to reference material we would like to purchase clipboards for writing surfaces. In addition we would like to build sifting tables or sifting frames to be used over tarps for the children while they are involved in a composting lesson. Children can sift large pieces out or worms depending on the size of the holes. Our composting is having a ripple effect on the community; classrooms and families are starting their own composting because they have learned something at The Giving Garden. We are having a mighty impact on our community, schools, environment, families and our children.
This program is supported by seeds of living education.
