About the Program:

Our garden's goal is to provide an engaging, inclusive outdoor classroom space where children, teachers, and parents can learn the skills to nourish themselves. We have partnered with a small organization called EarthBites, and together we work to provide integrated gardening and nutrition programming for all the students at Trafalgar. We started with 11 planter boxes 2 years ago, and last year expanded it to include an outdoor seating area and orchard with fruit trees and berries. This year, we are applying for this grant so that we can work with elders in the local community to create an indigenous plant garden where the students can learn about native plants and their traditional uses. We would also put some of the money towards some more basic garden infrastructure and tools, which are quickly becoming more necessary as we continue to expand our garden: additional compost bin to create a 3 bin compost system; shed to store tools; pitchforks, wheel barrow, rake, and shovels.
