Susick Elementary School
The original garden placed at Susick school was approximately 1,000 square feet in size and configured to produce approximately 1,000 pounds of food per garden, depending to some extent upon the weather. Our grant request would allow the garden to be doubled in size to 2,000 sq. ft. with an anticipated doubling of produce to 2,000 pounds.
The garden was started under the supervision of a master gardener provided by WWCC/ Hope Center. The garden produced fresh vegetables for use in the school lunch program, the summer school lunch program, and use by anyone in the community who has a need for food.
Utilizing the produce from the garden in school lunches or summer school lunch programs is a natural byproduct of the plan. Children would not only be involved in planting the garden and educated in the need for nutritional eating habits; they could literally eat the fruits of their labors.
In addition, the garden would be available to community residents, many of whom would be the parents of school children, during the summer months when harvest is high and school is out.
This program is supported by WW COMMUNITY CONNECTIONSINCORPORATED.
