About the Program:

The mission of the garden program at SunRidge Charter is to foster a living connection and relationship with the land upon which the school resides. Our lease on our land may be temporary but the work we do to restore the land will benefit many generations to come.

As the Greek proverb states, a society grows great when we plant trees in whose shade we may never sit.

Through the garden program at SunRidge, students develop a sense of place where they belong and interact. Abundance, sustainability, nourishment and community are the cornerstones of our program. Through stewardship and care of the land, children discover abundant diversity and value in the world right around them, from fungus to winged creatures to plant life. Through their participation in the management of consumption and waste, children learn the value of sustainability.

Our garden education curriculum reflects a deep relationship with the seasons and a knowledge of the gifts of those seasons. Children tend the land, identify patterns, plan for planting, preserve food and share with the community. Our garden education provides a foundation of respect for the Earth and our food resources; students carry this forward into life beyond our school.
