About the Program:

FoodCorps Programming has been established in Sumner Elementary for two years.Through FoodCorps Service Member facilitation, students from all grades are encouraged to connect with nature in their a courtyard garden. In the winter months, nutrition education is brought to their classrooms.  Sumner Elementary also participates in the USDA's Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program which gives every student in the school an opportunity to eat fresh food two-three times a week.  The desire of both the gardening  and nutrition programs is to empower students from this food desert to choose healthier lifestyles, to expose them to new vegetables, to get them out of their comfort zone, and to engage them in a hands-on, standards based curriculum that helps them become stewards of their earth.
