About the Program:

Suisun Valley is a rural K-8 school of approximately 520 students located in a prime agricultural area of Suisun Valley. Approximately 60% of our students come from outside our attendance area, attending our school as a school-of-choice option or NCLB choice from underperforming schools. The school has developed a reputation for being a small nurturing school and instructionally demanding environment. Its small size promotes frequent communication among staff and parents and close supervision of students, contributing to a small-town-like shared responsibility for students' academic, social, and emotional development.

Our gardens have been operational for approximately 15 years. For the past six years, our K-8 students have regularly worked in our gardens and enjoyed the fruits of their labor. In Science class, students learn about nutrition as they sample the fruits and vegetables they have grown. They prepare and eat crops in a variety of recipes. They write about their preferences, describing and comparing the foods they eat. Students have developed an appreciation for the taste and health benefits of fresh foods. We recently won a Golden Bell and Gold Ribbon for our Agri-Science program.
