St. Pius X
The primary goal of our garden is to give our students the hands-on opportunity to learn, not only about how vegetables grow, but to give them the opportunity to work together as a class and understand how we have fresh produce. Our program to create and provide healthy snacks for the entire school and staff lends itself to sustaining our garden. It helps us focus on the importance of nutrition from a young age and steer their eating habits in the right direction. We want the children and parents to have a personal commitment to our garden and its success. The students will learn how they can make a difference in the environment and experience the growing process first hand. The students will learn this process and associate it with their academic areas of learning such as science, English, and health. With this grant, it will be made possible to have a fence with a gate to surround our garden, purchase a soil tiller, and buy necessary cooking ingredients.
