About the Program:

Sprouting Change is the sustainable, organic garden project of Robert Bateman High School's Healthy Eating Activist Team. H.E.A.T.'s goal is to increase our students' awareness of the importance of growing local, sustainable crops, agricultural practices, and the social and environmental impact of organic gardening. We want students to be educated about the food they eating, along with becoming part of the process that brings the crops in our garden to the food on our plates. In addition to the invaluable learning opportunity this garden provides, we are also providing our culinary arts classes with the chance to be innovative, creative and adventurous with our school's cafeteria menu. Growing our own produce will lower the cost of meals for students, ensuring that all students have access to nutritious, local and affordfable food.

Currently, Sprouting Change has been awarded a $5000 WWF Green CommUnity School Grant to put our dream into action. Our next step is to apply for a Majesta Evergreen grant to fund an outdoor classroom, giving students in hospitality, agriculture, culinary arts, sciences, and life skills courses the educational advantage of learning in a hands-on environment. Above all, Sprouting Change strives to promote fun, flair and flavour in our generation of students and within the food choices they make!
