About the Program:

Springdale Park Elementary School is part of Atlanta Public Schools. SPARK was built as a certified LEED Gold school with the unique feature of a roof-top garden. The building was designed by Perkins+Will and has won the Atlanta Urban Design Commission Award of Excellence, the AIA Georgia Design Award, and the USGBC Award for Excellence in Sustainability in 2010. It was recently highlighted by the United States Green Building Council through their "High Performance, Healthy Schools" program for both their physical resources and their programming.

Since 2009, volunteer teachers and parents have provided hands-on garden lessons as well as organized special programming such as guest chef visits to demonstrate cooking the vegetables we have harvested.

These extensive programs earned Springdale Park the National Green Ribbon Award from the United States Department of Education along with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation Broze medal. SPARK is also a registered Clean Air Campagin School.

Beginning in 2012, an Environmental Education teacher was hired as part of the Springdale Park staff. She teaches health classes throughout the school as well as Enviornmental Education classes to grades K-3 and cooking and nutrition classes to grades 4-5.

All of our programs are funded through Schoolyard Sprouts with additional support from the Springdale Park Parent Teacher Organization.
