Soquel Elementary School
Soquel Elementary School has an on-going garden that we would like to supply with vegetable and fruit seedlings and seeds, year round, to allow this area of our school to flourish. We would like to continue to educate our students on the life cycle of plants, sustainable living, composting and learning to eat a rainbow of fruits and vegetables. Currently our garden is in need of replacing gopher wire under our garden plots, fixing our watering system so that each box is equally watered, and fortifying each plot with fresh, amended soil to allow our little garden to flourish.
When our garden committee began, we had a bare garden and our school lacked green areas. We had a bare row of portables, and a drooping flower box in front of our office. With the dedication of our community, school staff, parents, retired teachers and children, we now have two different rows of planter boxes that are over-spilling with vegetation, a garden plot in front of the office that supports a wide variety of vegetables and strawberries that children and classes can eat from year round, a garden mural in progress and a renewed dedication to teaching gardening, environmental awareness and the joy of gardening to our students.
This program is supported by Soquel Elementary Home & School Club.
