Shorecliffs Middle School
Our goal is to create a classroom outdoors, in a garden environment where we can teach middle school curriculum through the dynamics of gardening and horticulture. Our garden allows more time outside in nature which helps children grow lean, healthy bodies, and increases attention spans and school performance. We want to create a deeper understanding of natural systems, so students become better stewards of the Earth. Our vision is to provide positive experiences with fruits and vegetables and connect this to academic success through multiple subject areas. We realize students who plant and harvest their own fruits and veggies are more likely to increase their consumption of healthy foods at home, thus creating a willingness to eat fruit and vegetables as snacks and even encourage family members to buy them. Our point of view is that garden-enhanced education benefits academic performance and achievement across the board.
