About the Program:

My horticulture classes have been creating an organic garden on the school grounds on an abandoned native tree nursery. My students grow everything from seeds, as we have a large greenhouse to grow seedlings. Some of my students are ESOL students from various countries around the world. Many come from agrarian backgrounds. The knowledge and enthusiasm they bring to class is infectious, and we have been moving into new areas of urban farming. Over the summer I supervised 3 interns who grew vegetables and sold these at the local farmer's market. This led to our working with a local non-profit who provided us with worm compost that the students used to grow organic microgreens, which are delicious. These we sell to a local restaurant and caterer. We now have the opportunity to sell our microgreens to the Silver Spring Whole Foods Market! A grant of $2,000. would be used as start-up money for this venture. This would be an incredible opportunity for my students.
