About the Program:

The Seed to Table program at Greens Farms Academy is a journey in which students embark to develop meaningful connections with the world around them through the exploration of food and natural communities. Food serves as an excellent medium for learning as it permeates our everyday lives and opens itself to lessons on topics such as environmental literacy, culture, health and nutrition, history, and creativity. The organic garden is Seed to Table’s outdoor classroom where students gain opportunities for hands-on and experiential learning. Students experience all aspects of the food system from cultivating the land and planting a seed to harvesting and sharing the fruits of their labor around a communal table. Seed to Table allows students to establish and strengthen connections in the school community as well as with local farmers, vendors, and chefs. Students develop individual responsibility and discover how best to function as a community to achieve new goals. Their explorations will foster environmental stewardship and build a foundation of knowledge that will stay with them for life. Students will gain the necessary tools to become independent learners, active thinkers, and problem solvers.

During the academic year, the program serves K-12 students at GFA. GFA is an independent day school in Westport, CT with about 695 students from 30 surrounding towns. During the summer months, the school holds a one-week seminar for GFA students who wish to enrich their studies. A separate 6-week summer program also runs through Horizons National for about 200 Pre-K- 8th grade students from underserved public schools in Bridgeport, CT.
