About the Program:

The Seed Community Food Project is an initiative aimed at increasing community food security in Guelph, Ontario. We are currently a project of the Guelph Community Health Centre (CHC)- with plans to establish ourselves as an independent non-profit organzation in the next three years.

The mission of The Seed Community Food Project is to provide innovative programs that provide access to healthy food, build skills and community through food, and address the root causes of food insecurity and poverty.  Our program values include: the power of good food; a multi-dimensional approach; respect & diversity; and empowerment & community leadership

Currently, The Seed offers a healthy food distribution program to increase access to fresh, local produce through partner emergency food programs. Over the next two years, we will expand our programming to include kitchen and garden education programs, drop-in meals, school-based education programs, advocacy and civic engagment programs and affordable produce markets. These programs will be offered out of a Community Food Hub– an integrated, multi-faceted space -  which is currently being built. This space will include a kitchen classroom, education gardens, community spaces to share meals, and outdoor bake ovens. While this space is constructued, we will begin to offer kitchen and garden programs through using other shared program spaces in our community.

All Guelph CHC's programs serve priority populations - children and adults whose health is impacted by factors including: low-income income, unstable housing, recent immigration, addictions, mental health challenges, and physical disabilities. The Seed's independent programs will be open to all, but will give priority to those individuals and families experiencing some level of food insecurity. Our porgrams will also work in partnership with schools in neighbourhoods across Guelph with a high percentrage these priorty populations and/or families experiencing food insecurity.
