About the Program:

Seattle Parks & Recreation’s mission is to provide welcoming and safe opportunities to play, learn, contemplate & build community, and promote responsible stewardship of the land. The Urban Food Systems Program’s core value is to be a learning organization that creates opportunities for the most-impacted communities to equitably and powerfully engage with local, sustainable food systems. Good Food Gardens serve communities with significant Southeast Asian, East African, African American, and Latino populations in central and south Seattle. Our partners are from immigrant & refugee communities, low income households, and communities of color that are disproportionately effected by hunger, diabetes, and diet-related illnesses. This is exacerbated by minimal access to farm fresh food. Seattle’s history with restrictive covenants and red-lining lingers in that the demographics of gardeners on public lands do not reflect the demographics of the city. The team we have assembled reflects our commitment to inclusion, diversity and equity.
