About the Program:

Scott School is a K-8 and serves a diverse population in NE Portland, Oregon. In 2013, 84% of the students qualified for free or reduced lunch; the majority does not speak English in their home; and over 40% are active English language learners including significant Latino, Somali, and Vietnamese populations. A school garden is popular among the community regardless of ethnicity or language, making it a potential bridge for this diverse community.

The edible garden with 4 raised beds (and more planned) is cared for by the afterschool program – Schools United with Neighborhoods (SUN). SUN targets at risk children, and this grant would provide a small stipend for a part-time SUN teacher in Fall, Spring and Summer terms; new tumbling composters; and seeds/soil amendments for the 2014-15 school year. The garden will also be integrated into science curriculum that utilizes in-depth topic exploration through the GLAD strategies to support English language learners.
