School Garden and Culture Exchange with Ethiopian Schools--Join in!
Hello,
Thanks for your interest in the school garden and culture exchange program with Ethiopian schools! I’m working with a teacher in Ethiopia to pair American classrooms and Ethiopian classrooms. We have the goal of facilitating a cultural exchange between American and Ethiopian youth, using school gardens as the starting point.
We understand that teachers have full a curriculum so this program is informal and adaptable. It can be implemented in a flexible way that fits your needs and time constraints. The program can be school wide or focused on specific classes. The aim is to expose students to agricultural practices, foods and cultures they may not otherwise have the opportunity to learn about. Components of the program include:
-The electronic exchange of information between paired teachers regarding their school garden, basic food and agriculture information from their respected areas, and general cultural information.
-Teachers introduce this information to their students in whatever form they chose.
-American teachers encourage their students to learn more about Ethopia and Ethiopian teachers encourage their students to learn more about the United States.
-The paired teachers agree on how often to exchange information and what information to exchange.
It may be possible for students to have penpals. There is no fee to participate in this program since my role is basically as a facilitator.
I hope this is a program that you would like to participate in. Please let me know your questions. I can be reached at (660) 652-4493 (home phone) or at therathacker@yahoo.com.
Sincerely,
Rebecca Thacker
