About the Program:

Our immediate goal is to enhance our currently-functional youth garden. Our garden currently has one vegetable bed available for each teacher who has requested one (8), and one community bed, which is tended to and harvested by volunteers. These beds are thriving and well-maintained, and we are ready to expand!

Our vision for our school garden is to build an edible trellis. When faced with limited space, what better way to maximize it than by growing up? We plan to purchase structures which can support fruit-producing vines, trees, and shrubs. This vertical addition to our garden maximizes the limited growing space available. We will plant kiwi vines on the large garden arbor, creating a lovely shade area below. The grape vines will grow along the 3 trellises and the arch bench. The blueberry bushes will line the base. This addition to our garden will be supported by the partnership we have between teachers, students, families, and the greater community with the common goal of building life skills that contributes to healthy lifestyles and sustainability.

This program is supported by Santa Cruz Gardens Elementary Home & School Club.
