About the Program:

Our school the Round Rock Opportunity Center, has over the past four years built a garden spot from a vacant lot. The focus has been on wildflowers, native plants and other decorative plants. We have an unused greenhouse and this year would wish to expand our student's efforts to include starting, raising and cultivating vegetables, leafy greens, peppers and herbs. The products of this garden will be used to supplement school food program or, if sufficient, for distribution to local charities.
This program has generated great student interest over the past years, and has been nearly 100% student driven for design, construction and implementation with teachers adding only assistance and advice.
We have had a small vegetable garden and the students participating in this small patch have enjoyed the planting, care and harvesting immensely and have exhibited great pride in their work.
We have also integrated the garden work into academics including biology, social skills, digital design (to design garden spaces), mathematics and even literature.
