Roseville Community School
Our RCS Garden Program was developed to enhance the student's understanding of gardening and life science. We strive to provide a natural gathering place for children and the school community for lunch or exploration that helps children make connections to nature throughout the day.
While we have had a garden for some time, we started developing a curriculum this year with the intention to fully develop a hands-on program that also supports classroom learning. The goal is for each student to be able to grow from seed, understand a plant life cycle, understand the interplay of our complex ecosystem on plant growth, gain an appreciation of sustainable gardening, enjoy the fruits of their labor, and hopefully experience joy and wonder through this learning process.
The Whole Kids Grant would support this primary endeavor. It would allow us to rebuild our old, dilapidated garden boxes and to build an outdoor station for potting plants and doing experiments in a natural lab space. Ideally, we would like a small storage cabinet that is integrated with the garden, allowing students quick and independent access to their tools, journals, and garden books. Finally, the grant would allow us to purchase child-size tools and resource books.
