About the Program:

The goals for the Roosevelt Middle School garden align closely with FoodCorps' priorities of improving children's health through knowledge, engagement, and access. Another component of the school garden is empowerment. We know that kids who participate in the design, construction, and operation of a school garden develop skills and confidence that enable them to become young leaders.

Cedar Rapids is a major agricultural center surrounded by some of the most fertile soil in the world. Still, many of Roosevelt's lower-income students live in neighborhoods classified by the USDA as food deserts. They have to little knowledge about food. One result is that 42% of the students about to enter Roosevelt are overweight or obese.

Matthew 25 wants to transform our community's food culture from the ground up. We believe kids here have enough obstacles, and that healthy food can make life better for them. Through hands-on education, we will help kids grow into strong, healthy citizens.

This program is supported by MATTHEW 25 MINISTRY HUB.
