Rio Rosales Elementary
The goal of the garden is primarily twofold. First, the students would learn from where plant-based, whole food comes. The reality for many of our students is that they consume pre-packaged, processed foods on a daily basis. At a young age, we want to instill in our students that good, healthy food comes from the earth. We would love for students to be able to see the stages of food growth and care for the plants. Secondly, as a by product of learning about how food is grown, we want to teach our students responsibility. The students primarily will be responsible for the care and upkeep of the garden. With the garden we can instill a positive work ethic and when the garden is ready for the harvest, the students can take pride in their hard work. As an intertwined goal, students would get to taste what they grow. We strongly believe that this grant will expose our community to a healthier way of life and furthermore build our relationship with the families in our community. This grant will make growing a successful garden possible, which will show our students and their families the excitement and satisfaction from growing and eating vegetables and fruits. It will let students taste and try new vegetables and fruits that their normal diet would not include, which can open up their options when they then shop for food. Providing the opportunity for students to have a positive and meaningful experience with healthy food will influence their overall well being and hopefully effect the future choices of the students and families in our community.
