ReNEW Schaumburg Elementary
The goal of our garden is to improve our students, families, and community's health. The garden provides an opportunity for students to learn about nutrition. Watching fruits and vegetables grow increases the likelihood they will eat more fruits and vegetables, become more knowledgeable about nutrition, and develop ownership over their own health. Through gardening, students are given the opportunity to learn and explore. They can try new things and engage in hands-on learning and physical activity. Gardens can assist with student learning in all subject areas, and it appeals to different learning styles. As students, families, and community members work in the garden, a larger sense of community is reinforced. When working on our school garden, students are given an opportunity to work together with other people who are both similar and different from themselves. Older students work with younger ones, which provides an opportunity to demonstrate leadership skills.
