About the Program:

The goal of the Friendship Garden is to change the learning landscape of a student with special needs by creating an engaging and meaningful edible garden experience. This grant will help our school expand a working garden for the use as a living laboratory for our special needs student population. Students will develop gardening and leadership skills. The garden will provide an opportunity for our culinary students to develop leadership and life skills when learning to problem solve and work as teams in their kitchen gardens. We will do this by dividing the class into three kitchen teams and each team will have 2 raised garden beds to plant, water and harvest. Students will participate in hands on learning experiences of the farm to table top concepts. We will also make it possible for our students in wheelchairs to learn about gardening. Currently we have two wheelchair accessible tabletop gardens and one student had his first experience at age 18 with the plants and the dirt!
