The Pennsylvania School for the Deaf
From Tray to Table is a multi-grade comprehensive project that will be run by Deaf students with autism and other developmental disabilities at the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf in Philadelphia PA. In this age of childhood obesity, everyone is involved in conversations focused on how we as a nation can get our children to eat healthier foods. Habits of eating fast food developed in childhood of many adults are being passed down to their children. This project ensures that students develop a familiarity and taste for vegetables, one of the areas absent in the lives of many children, especially those who reside in the city. Children tend to eat foods they cook themselves and do so even more readily if they grow them. It is critical that each child experience growing, eating and cooking a rainbow of vegetables while they are still in school. Students engaged in this project will also learn composting. The green house allows for this to occur in children’s lives year round.
