Peck Elementary Garden Goal

The Goal of the Peck Elementary Garden is primarily as a learning tool to teach the whole child in all areas of growth and development encompassing community, health and nutrition, academics, and personal responsibility. Over 90% of the students qualify for free and reduced lunch based on low income. The school community of the Third Ward is officially classified as a food desert with limited access to fresh fruits and vegetables. The school garden builds community and peace through the simple act of growing food and shared experiences together. The school garden increases exposure to fruits and vegetables of which many of the students have never seen before. The garden provides opportunities for hands-on experiences in the garden to enrich academic success. Caring for the earth builds student personal responsibility in seeing the outcomes of success directly in bountiful harvests and cultivates the next generation of environmental stewards.
