About the Program:

Located in Appalachian Kentucky, Owsley County School District (OCSD) has three centrally located schools ( a Headstart serving 3-4 year olds, an elementary school serving grades Pre-K–6 and a middle/high school serving grades 7–12), with a total enrollment of 850 students. In ranking order from most to least frequently purchased, the district has sourced local fruits (watermelons, cantaloupes, banana melons, tomatoes, apples, strawberries) and local vegetables (potatoes, green peppers, green beans, sweet potatoes, corn, cabbage, cumbers, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, green onions, and herbs). Plants have already been planted this year by students for blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries for future fruit availability. Soybeans, pumpkins, ingredients for fresh salsa, and sorghum is also currently being grown and/or produced. Our goal is to add an apple orchard of 8 trees on our school farm to add to our produce for another fruit available to our schools and customers.
