North Winneshiek Community School District
The North Winneshiek School garden supports the school district in creating a comprehensive learning environment for students to develop and practice lifelong wellness behaviors. The garden includes a flat plot of land as well as two raised beds where students harvest produce to be served at lunch, on the afterschool snack cart and in classrooms where students are encouraged to eat a rainbow of fruits and vegetables.
The garden is an integral part of cross-curricular education between science, math, history and language arts and supports health education and literacy as teachers and students collaboratively practice environmental stewardship through hands on learning and discovery. Students ranging in age from pre-kindergarten through middle school are caretakers of the garden and learn from their landscape while planning, planting, cleaning, problem solving and harvesting produce from their out-door classroom.
