About the Program:

Our goal is to teach the children at our school and their families that food doesn't have to come from a grocery store. What struck me the strongest was when I was speaking to a student that I had a tomato from my home garden for part of my lunch, that halted me and asked if I was sure it was safe to eat. I said of course, why wouldn't it be? Their response was that I hadn't purchased it at Walmart. Their is a systematic mindset that we are dependent on processed foods. We are dependent on chain supermarkets. This couldn't be farther from the truth. As I probed my class more, I opened their eyes to a wealth of foods they didn't even know existed, ie purple carrots, purple tomatoes, purple asparagus, purple artichokes, etc. The color purple struck a chord that the other colors didn't. I feel I am on a mission to spread a wealth of both mental knowledge and hands on experience of information that can only be learned in a garden.
