About the Program:

We want to provide students with an introduction to the various aspects of gardening, which includes:

discussion of where our fresh produce originates.

Living and non-living organisms

Composting

Hands-on learning experiences

Reusing, reducing, and recycling

Real life experiences

Many of our students are apartment dwellers and have little experience of the natural world. A school garden will help bring science studies vividly to life, and help the children feel more at home with and more connected to the world of nature.

Another goal is to help build community connections. We are already seeing this happening. As classes have begun collecting compost during their lunch, cafeteria workers have gotten involved. School staff with gardening experience have stepped forward to express interest and offer support. We expect to see this happen with our parent body also, as the visibility of the project increases with the growth of the garden.
