About the Program:

Moss Haven Farm provides nutritional, agricultural and environmental education on an urban school farm that grows student skills in academics, healthy lifestyle and giving back to the community. Our school farm serves the community surrounding Moss Haven Elementary, a diverse neighborhood of Lake Highlands in northeast Dallas, Texas. It is considered to be an urban community with a blend of single-family dwellings and apartment communities. Moss Haven Farm is an outdoor learning environment that teaches students the wonder of the entire farm to fork process from seed and soil to their school cafeteria and even to their table at home. When crops are in season, we have an abundance of produce that we share with our students and our community. All students take part in planting seeds in our gardens, tending the crops and harvesting for classroom cooking activities, our salad bar program and our food bank donations. The curriculum is planned according to the school district's timing for delivery of content and state requirements, that is connected to all strands of academics as well as social, environmental and health values. Hands-on, active, outdoor learning gets them out of their seats and benefits our students as they learn and retain content that they actually experience. The Moss Haven Farm impacts behavioral change in school and beyond, where children know how to choose healthy foods, live active lives, care for the earth and most importantly learn valuable lifelong skills to pass along to others.
