About the Program:

A school garden at McCardle Elementary will allow students to learn that eating healthy can also be fun. Although a school salad bar would be the ultimate goal, students could initially participate in weekly tasting parties where teachers may share healthy recipes using fresh ingredients from the garden. Supplemental handouts may be sent home with the kids to share the recipes with the family.
The garden will also give children the hands on experience of watching their food go from farm to fork. It will show the basics of creating our own fruits and vegetables in a sustainable manner. From seed propagation to harvest, students can experiment with organic practices to grow healthy food in a healthy ecosystem.
Plants and students alike need the proper environment to grow. All areas of common core study can be directly tied to garden lesson plans. With some dirt under their fingernails and a few extra greens on their plate, students will have the ability to blossom at McCardle.
