Biodiversity at the table. I have been growing liberated salad from organic seeds (mainly purchased from PeaceSeeds.com - Dr. Alan Kapuler in Corvallis) for 32 years. Other good companies are out there now - like Adaptive Seeds in Oregon and many others.
I can grow 100+ greens and ruby reds West of the Cascades in the PNW without protective coverings even in the FALL and WINTER. Many other areas of the country could assemble their liberated salad varieties and share in groups or with cooperatives participating in buying and sharing the seeds. Many of the seeds I have used are heirlooms.
Some of the greens I grow - 7 kinds of kale and mustard and spinach and cabbage, herbs, onions, garlic, chard, 25 kinds of lettuce, arugula, tat soi, bok choi and many more. Did you know that there are at least 2,300 kinds of lettuce?
I am not affiliated with any particular school program but have distributed 5,000 packages of mixed liberated salad seeds in the last 32 years to people from 150 nations. This has probably helped to grow the movement in the last three decades of growing mixed greens aka mesclun mix etc.
I am on the Board of Directors of The Tilth Foundation which aspires to helping farmers archive farm history and successes and preserve farms and homesteads by helping people learn about land trust, cooperatives, B Corporations, LLCs, etc. and then HOW DO we create financial mechanisms to allow the NEXT GENERATION to move on and eventually own the farms!
Informally, this project might be called FarmKIN (K - knowledge data base; I - inventory of business farm ownership models; N - New Nesters Next Generation.
I am also on the new advisory board of Oregon Tilth, Inc. that certifies 1400+ farms and food processors worldwide.
My business for 26 years has been selling real estate including farms and urban and rural homesteads to transition to organic - for the prime book on this read The Transition Document - see it at Sunbow Farm.org
I am owner of Amethyst Realty LLC and sell real estate only in Oregon but can refer people to other Realtors nationwide.
