About the Program:

Leonard R. Flynn Elementary is a Spanish immersion and general education public school in San Francisco’s Bernal Heights neighborhood that serves a diverse community of students in grades Upper Elementary. Over the last five years, the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) at Flynn has worked to transform 2,000 square feet of the school’s blacktop into a school garden and outdoor classroom space where students from all grade levels learn about life cycles, healthy eating habits, and how to grow their own food. The goal of the garden is to offer an innovative learning space for students that connect lessons learned in the classroom to the garden. We aim to offer an integrated learning environment that allows students to learn, play, and thrive in the garden. A grant from the Whole Kids Foundation will be transformative for our school, helping us promote ecoliteracy and sustainability through a partnership with Education Outside, the nation’s first science-and-sustainability service corp.
