About the Program:

At Lake Hills STEM Elementary School we would like to install Vertical Wheel Gardening Units (VWGU) which will help students apply next-generation technology skills into the world of hydroponics gardening. One of our goals is to help students understand how the concepts of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) have been used throughout the history of gardening. Our gardens (Native American, pioneer, raised bed, and rain gardens) serve as living laboratories which provide our K-6 students with a real-world context for integrating lessons across all subject areas. They engage students in hands-on, project based gardening activities. that promote a wide range of 21st Century skills such as communication, problem solving, critical thinking, intellectual curiosity, and leadership skills. Another goal that we have for our students is to be able to communicate the need for finding alternative ways of growing food such as with the Vertical Wheel Gardening Units and to be able to explain STEM concepts incorporated into each kind of garden we have on site.
