KIPP DC Connect Academy
This grant will make it possible for the KIPP DC Webb Campus to build a garden that will enhance the school community by increasing fresh food engagement, education, and access. By growing healthy food, we not only will improve the eating habits of students, faculty, and community alike, but we will also utilize the garden as a critical tool for experiential learning. For example, the 5th and 6th grade students can construct a Victory Garden during their WWII Social Studies unit, solidifying their understanding of the concept while seeing their own garden from start to finish and trying fresh and healthy foods along the way. In addition, we will use the garden for healthy food demonstrations and cooking classes for students, and incorporate garden produce into the cafeteria. Finally, because our campus encompasses three separate schools (early childhood, elementary, and middle) the garden will serve as the ideal tool to build a community among all grade levels.
