About the Program:

Kids Unlimited (KU) began in 1998 as a fledgling youth development nonprofit with the mission and purpose to empower youth to improve their lives while bettering the community. KU created a large youth development center which houses the KU Academy charter school. With the 2014-2015 school year, the charter school has full day kindergarten and grades 1-4 totaling 250 students. The school's target population includes the highest risk children and youth in our area who are: Hispanic/Latino, English Language Learners, migrant families, children experiencing/exposed to domestic violence, substance abuse and trafficking and active gang violence in their neighborhoods. Obesity is a significant problem for the students attending the KU Academy. Having a developmentally appropriate outdoor playground that joins with a school garden that is tended by the school students is core to KU’s work to change the exercise and nutrition of the youngsters being served by the agency and the school.
