About the Program:

Families that cook at home are healthier but not every family has the knowledge or skills to cook simple, healthy meals their family will enjoy.

Our project aims to improve the health of an entire school community in Novato, California - children, parents, teachers and their families - by teaching basic cooking skills focused on vegetables and fruits first.

We will teach an entire elementary school to cook and eat more vegetables together with:

  1. Free access for 360 kids and their families to online cooking lessons through a lifetime membership to my Joyful 12™ Online Vegetable Cooking Program, normally $48 per person.

  2. In-person cooking lessons and education for parents and kids at the school each week on Wellness Wednesdays—in partnership with local community educators and sponsors of our project.

  3. Jr. Chef Helpers mentorship and cooking program for 4th and 5th graders of the school provided by Bay Leaf Kitchen.

  4. Classroom lessons about the vegetable of the week and cafeteria tastings.

  5. Weekly cooking goals the entire school takes together, led by parents and PTA as our ambassadors.

If we are successful, this could change the way we think about taking the school food movement to the next level.

  1. First, we'll work with schools in the broader Novato School District that are at a stage where they are ready to deepen their work by teaching families how to cook.
  2. Because we are using a technology platform, we can easily scale the access to the Joyful 12 to other school communities.
  3. We will train PTA ambassadors and enlist community educators to help roll out the program.
