Jonathan Dayton Botany School Garden
Botany is a one semester elective at our suburban high school. Creating awareness of how food is grown locally and globally is the emphasis of this unit of study. With our short spring growing season, we have started our seedlings in containers in the classroom. When weather permits plants will be moved to our courtyard garden space.
We plan to harvest our crops as ready and prepare tastings of vegetables and herbs freshly cut from the plants. Students have eaten fresh mozarella on Italian bread with olive oil, balsamic vinegar and our classroom basil, served with a green salad mix. They have also prepared a spicy mesclin mixed salad with cutie pie oranges.
Enthusiasm runs high in our class of 26 "soon to be graduating" seniors, who enjoy the hands-on format of our class. We will be selling some of crops to teachers to help pay for our our supplies.
