John Adams Middle School

The goal of this garden project is to expand our existing garden space to include an orchard. The orchard would allow students to see a wider variety of produce that can be grown right here in New Mexico. They will learn that some produce, such as zucchini, tomatoes, and herbs, grow on bush like plants. They will see that other produce, such as apples, peaches, and cherries, grow on trees. Students will be able to compare and contrast the different plants that we get food from and learn that some plants need to be replanted annually while others will survive the winter and come back on their own.

Expanding the garden space to include an orchard will meet the requests of the students. Every spring when it is time to plant, students inevitably ask to grow many fruits that grow on trees. Valuing the students' opinions and desires will give the garden even more buy in from the student body.

This grant will also help to pull the entire school community even closer together. We will not only grow our produce here at school, we will sell it to the families that live in this area. This will provide families with inexpensive fruits and vegetables and encourage healthy nutritional habits throughout our community.
