About the Program:

J. H. Hines School Garden is a partnership between World Hunger Relief, Inc. and J. H. Hines Elementary to bring fresh vegetables and garden education to East Waco.

The vision of JH Hines school garden includes partnering with community stakeholders in East Waco to provide students with an outdoor classroom where they can learn about where food comes from and how to prepare healthy meals. Students will learn this by helping to plant, maintain and harvest vegetables in the garden alongside WHRI interns, AmeriCorps members, and teachers from JH Hines.

The JH Hines school garden will serve as a model for other school gardens in the Waco community by maintaining relationships with school representatives and community members. WHRI also seeks to provide the resources necessary to equip teachers to utilize the garden as an outdoor classroom.

The produce grown in garden will be used for in-class cooking demonstrations for students. Because the WHRI Veggie Van will be located in East Waco, JH Hines will play a key role in addressing food security issues in Waco. JH Hines has obtained a grant to be used in 2015 that provides vegetables for students to take home. WHRI interns will be providing students with vouchers to use to purchase vegetables from the Veggie Van. The vouchers will be given out once per week and will expire after one week.
