Hillcrest Elementary School
Hillcrest School has a well established garden but we are looking to expand our garden program to include additional opportunities for our students and families to learn about healthy meal preparation and nutrition. We would like to add additional raised beds and add vegetable variety to our garden as well as an herb garden. Creating a garden oasis gives our students a chance to escape the asphalt that is all around them.
Hillcrest School is currently working with one of our community partners to refurbish our old, non functioning kitchen to be functional again after many decades on non-use. Our goal is to have a working kitchen by fall 2013. The new kitchen will have a salad bar that we plan to stock with vegetables harvested from the school garden. One of the uses of the salad bar will help to feed the 250 students in our after school program. We would also like to use the kitchen to hold cooking classes for students and their families with vegetables from the garden.
