Highlander Charter School
Our school first planned a garden in 2005, which has been incorporated into our science curriciula from kindergarten to 8th grade, as well as into afterschool and summer programs. Over the course of the year, all of our 300-plus students get an opportunity to work and learn in the garden.
We are seeking this grant in order to expand the garden and its educational potential. The garden has been inactive for the last year because of construction. The space will open by the end of 2012. We want to not just reopen our garden, but to expand and improve it. Our goals are to increase students' access to fresh produce and to engage and empower students through youth-led and -driven projects. To do so, we would like to increase the tools we have to work the garden, create a storage space for them, repair the existing beds, and add new beds. We would like to expand the garden from 60 square feet to 90 square feet over the next year.
