About the Program:

The goal of the school garden project is to fully incorporate the school gardens into the lessons for all grade level communities at the school. The Montessori teaching philosophy encourages integration of the student with the natural world, and use of the raised bed gardens encourage and enhance this learning process.

Hermosa would love to improve and expand the school garden program in order to be able to expand the opportunities to the entire school community. Students would be able to corroborate and select which crops they wish to plant, engage on hands on planting and care of the garden, study the various stages of development of the different crops, harvest the crops and consume the end product. At each step of the process, students would incorporate the use of the gardens into their lessons.

It is the intention of Hermosa Montessori that the lessons that the students learn at the school will be brought home, where they will educate their families as to the importance of sustainable, community-level, organic agriculture. By educating their families with their hands-on experiences, they will be able to evoke change in their families and, eventually, their wider communities.
