About the Program:

The Henry C. Lea School has had a garden since 1999.  The University of Pennsylvania's Judith Rodin was an early supporter.  UC Green under the leadership of Sue MacQueen and with the support of Joe Shapiro, Johannah Fine, Michael Dillen, has been a source of expertise and guidence.  Dr. Vivianne Nachmias, who is a Professor Emerita from U Penn has been the guiding force of the "Secret Garden" since its inception.  The naming of Lea's garden is based on the fact that although it is on the school grounds it is not able to be viewed by passersby.  It was created in an unused courtyard between classroom buildings. The purpose originally was to create a space where students could learn gardening skills and incorporate math, science, and other skills in a hands-on environment.  With the recent emphasis of greening in the community, and the creation of a formal plan to "Green" Lea's two asphalt schoolyards the garden has become a rallying point for activities.

With the help of local residents and members of WPCNS, (Amara Rocker,  Julie Scott, Jennifer Martel, David Hincher), a design was created for the Lea schoolyard(s) which will include outdoor classrooms, rain gardens and other green areas to reduce the water runoff from the buildings and property into the watershed.  This area will be also used by local residents and the community for recreational activities.

The school is also a proud recipient of the Muhammad Ali Peace Garden Grant, and also the Whole Foods "Whole Kids" Foundation Grant.  Lea also was awarded a RecycleBank grant which was used to add raised beds to the current garden.
