Food Growing at Heeley City Farm

Heeley City Farm is the leading community local food grower in Sheffield. We garden in an organic and sustainable way, using no artificial chemicals and fertilizers and no harmful pesticides and herbicides. With partners we have created a network of and actively manage over 20 local food growing school and community gardens in Sheffield and the surrounding areas. We cultivate over 10 acres of land, have constructed over 100 raised beds, erected 20 polytunnels and greenhouses and planted over 200 fruit trees and soft-fruit bushes. We run regular seed exchanges, apple days, horticultural shows, Big Lunches, Foraging sessions, bee-keeping training, open days and other events. Our Wortley Hall Walled Garden is Soil Association organically certified.

Weekly we provide 20 days or 150 plus hours of open supervised local food growing training (with qualified and experienced trainers), work experience and volunteering opportunities. Each year we train over 100 local food growers and involve about 500 school children. We support over 30 trainees and about 100 volunteers dedicated to local food growing and food related activities.
