About the Program:

The Urban Farm is New Jersey’s largest school garden. The farm is located at the Morris School District’s Lafayette Learning Center. Throughout the growing season, the Urban Farm serves the community by:

  • Providing educational opportunites for the 5,200 school children of the Morris School District, as well as area colleges and our local community members

  • Creating opportunities for children and adults to experience local, chemical-free food

  • Donating food to partnering charities such as the Interfaith Food Pantry, Community Soup Kitchen and Table of Hope.

  • Serving Urban Farm’s produce at the Morristown High School Cafeteria and to students at the Lafayette Learning Center Preschool

The Urban Farm was designed with the learning process in mind. Rather than long rows, diverse crops are grown in beds that can be easily accessed by children. Colorful signs are used to mark the crops in English and in Spanish. Chemicals are never used so that children and community members can safely dig their hands right into our soil.

The farm is managed by a small staff including the farm manager, Shaun Ananko, part time interns, and community volunteers. All food is grown with “beyond organic” principles, meaning we use no chemicals, organic or otherwise. The land is worked mostly by hand, with the occasional help of machine tillers and mowers. And Farmer Shaun chooses strategic times to let our chickens do their part by eating bugs and aerating the soil!

During the growing season we offer a limited amount of our produce for sale to the general public through our unique farm stand program. Paired with a volunteer, you’ll walk the Urban Farm and select your vegetables straight from the plant itself! It doesn’t get any fresher than that! Plus, all proceeds go directly to supporting the work of Grow It Green Morristown in our community.

Farm Stand Hours of Operation:
