Green Plate Special
Founded in 2011, Green Plate Special (GPS) engages ethnically diverse, middle-school youth (ages 10 – 14) through classroom- and after-school, hands-on learning in the self-sufficiency skill of growing, cooking, and eating healthy, tasty food.
Green Plate Special is Seattle’s only middle-school specific, curriculum-based program combining food growing with cooking. We teach practical everyday life skills and are part of the solution to breaking the cycle of childhood obesity and other food related health issues. We empower, urban youth to engage with nature, get their hands in the earth, and eat food that’s good for them.
Since 2011 we have been located in Seattle’s Central District, on the corner of MLK Jr. Way and East Union Street, where we transformed a derelict lot vacant lot into a youth-focused food garden. Beginning in January of 2014 our new a permanent garden and future kitchen location will be at 2115 25th Ave. S., Seattle 98144. Located on the corner of S. Walker and 25th Ave. S., across the alley from Treehouse for Kids and the 2100 Building.
