About the Program:

The overall mission of the garden is for Great Oaks middle school students to gain an understanding of and exposure to how food grows. Through visibility and use of the garden across several classes and topics, we hope to increase the students' willingness to eat fruits and vegetables grown in the garden by 25% over the growing season.

Not only will students have the ability to interact with and grow their own plants in an area where the nearest green space is more than a half mile walk, teachers will be able to engage students in interactive lessons outside the classroom on school grounds. Students will interact with the garden in Math, Health, and Science classes, as well as part of a course in Sustainability and Service Learning. Parents and families of students will be able to see the community-born and -
