About the Program:

The goal for the Gilford Middle School garden is to provide the opportunity for hands-on application of our student curriculum while simultaneously focusing on community action and social responsibility. The garden will connect to curriculum across all four grade levels, with the intention of emphasizing critical thinking, communication, and creativity. Our connections to the community will include but not be limited to our school’s “Got Lunch” program for students in need of healthy food on the weekends and in the summer, an annual “Fill My Bowl” fundraiser, and coordination with our school kitchen for student/parent nutrition awareness. In addition, our cooperation with our local farm, Winnepesaukee Woods, will help students learn about sustainable food systems, consumption, correlations to health, and resource management. Each student will have a “hand” in the gardens in a new and different way each year, and their respect and knowledge of healthy foods will grow concurrently.
